GOODBYE 2012..

Perseids meteor shower composite // David Kingham

My pipe is out, my glass is dry;
My fire is almost ashes too;
But once again, before you go,
And I prepare to meet the New:
Old Year! a parting word that's true,
For we've been comrades, you and I --
I thank God for each day of you;
There! bless you now! Old Year, good-bye!

39th MARUNADA

Marunada is the greatest yearly event in Lovran.
Beacuse of special climate, the Lovran's chestnuts are one of the most tasteful chestnuts in the World,
and this is why this event is so special.  Marunada traditionally begins mid-October in Lovran and then
migrates to the neighboring villages of Liganj and Dobreć in the weekends to follow.

15-17 October, Marunada Festival, Lovran, Croatia
Blessed with a mild microclimate, the town of Lovran on Croatia's Opatija riviera is known for the
abundance of sweet chestnuts, or maruni, that grow in its hinterlands. In mid-October, the town
celebrates its prized harvest with a festival which begins in Lovran and moves to the neighbouring
villages of Liganj and Dobre on the subsequent weekends. The town's narrow paved streets are filled
with stalls offering various maruni creations – from maruni honey to ice cream– and restaurants lay on
special menus, with dishes such as rump steak with maruni sauce and crêpes with maruni cream.

Charming Crooks

Photobucket
Photobucket

In summer days, with the first rays of sun, a gang of grey magpies comes to my neighborhood.
I watch them from my window as they waddle down the street and since there is a wide span

of elegance between magpie in the air and a magpie on the ground I can't help but to laugh a little. :)

Anyhow those charming, clever crooks don't seem to have any problem with their self confidence

as they are cruising down the street, patiently checking every little corner. Their sharp concentration
and their attention for details convinces me in their capability for finding all kinds of strange treasures...
I can't help not to think how great it would be if I could put a beak and be part of  that gang just for a day. :)

Arboretum Trsteno

Photobucket

Arboretum Trsteno is located some 30 km north of Dubrovnik and it is the best known arboretum in Croatia.
 This is a place of incredible beauty and it is hard not to feel admiration and profound respect.

The arboretum was erected by the local noble family Gozze in the late 15th century, who requested ship captains
 to bring back seeds and plants from their travels. In 1962 the Arboretum Trsteno was registered in the list of
protected natural monuments. The protected area covers around 255,000 square metres.
The pride of the arboretum are two Oriental Planes located on the central market place of Trsteno. They are
over 500 years old and are unique specimens of its kind in Europe. The ancient trees are both about 45/60 m
tall and their trunks are 5 m in diameter.

It is hard to leave this place untouched in some way. Arboretum has inspired me to start a Herbarium, first one
after many years. :) It is truly a magical place and i am sure i will go back there as often as i can...

 extinct. The six remaining subspecies are all threatened by poaching, illegal wildlife trade and habitat
loss. Wild tiger numbers have fallen by about 95% over the past 100 years." - World Wildlife Fund

“Please don't go. We'll eat you up. We love you so.”

“Once a little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it.
I answer all my children’s letters — sometimes very hastily — but this one I lingered over.
I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, “Dear Jim: I loved your card.”
Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said, “Jim loved your card so much he ate it.”
That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was
 an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”

Abandoned Shadows

Attracted by the light of blank white papers that I left last night, many velvet moths gathered in my apartment.
I didn't notice them when I entered room to close the window and my sudden appearance woke them up from
that "mirage".  They flew out in panic and left their little shadows on the paper, under the light.
Now I am waiting for them to return and claim their shadows back. I even have one tiny needle and some silk
thread in case they need some help... As we all learned from Peter Pan. :)
