Edmund Dulac (1882-1953) is one of the great artists associated with the Golden Age of Illustration.

Dulac displayed an artistic interest from an early age, with his favourite medium - watercolours - being

established in his teenage years. Typically, Dulac's early illustrations for fairy tales from Scheherazadè,

Shakespeare, Andersen and Stawell. In 1913, the mellow, romantic blues that Dulac had tended towards

a brighter palette and more oriental style that characterised his interpretation of fairy tales, myths and

legend for the remainder of his life.

The Magic of Ink

About 1,600 years ago, a popular ink recipe was created. The recipe was used for centuries.
The reservoir pen, which may have been the first fountain pen, dates back to 953, when Ma'ād al-Mu'izz,
the caliph of Egypt, demanded a pen that would not stain his hands or clothes, and was provided with
a pen that held ink in a reservoir. The two most used black writing inks in history are carbon inks and iron
gall inks. Both types create problems for preservationists.

In fine art, the term 'pen and ink' denotes a drawing technique involving the use of black and other coloured
inks which are applied to a support (generally paper) with either a dip pen or a reservoir pen. This traditional,
versatile media has been used by Western artists since ancient-Egyptian times, for sketches, finished drawings
or ink and wash paintings. It is also one of the main mediums involved in book illustration.

Croatia elects centre-left government

Croatia sought to turn its back on years of political sleaze and scandal by

inflicting a humiliating defeat on the rightwing party that has run the

country for almost all of its two decades of independence.

In a general election that decided which government will take the former

Yugoslav country into the EU in 18 months, Croats handed power to a

centre-left coalition of four parties led by Zoran Milanovic, the social

democrats' leader. Early projections on Croatian TV on Sunday gave the

centre-left coalition 83 seats in the 151-seat parliament, against 40 for

the governing HDZ or Croatian Democratic Union party of the prime

minister, Jadranka Kosor.

The HDZ has ruled since Croatia broke away from Yugoslavia in 1991,

with the exception of a three-year hiatus in 2000-3, and in the past two

years has been exposed as the wellspring of state-organised corruption

and embezzlement on a massive scale. Its former leader and prime minister,

Ivo Sanader, is on trial on two sets of corruption charges after being

arrested while trying to flee the country. Another former deputy prime

minister and other senior party figures have also been charged, while

the party itself is at the centre of a slush-fund scandal.

The new centre-left government, including liberals and regionalists, will

have to contend with a disastrous economic legacy, with national debt

soaring to Italian or Belgian levels, unemployment nudging 20% and a

depressed national mood.

Later this week, Croatia will sign its EU membership treaty, before joining

in July 2013. The hope is that EU membership will trigger an influx of

funds and foreign investment. Croatia is likely to be the last country to

join the EU for at least a decade.

As i said before I am this year's Croatian Children's Festival artist patron.

Yesterday I was a witness of children's magical splendor! :D They dance,

sing, write and paint - and they do that so beautifully light and true.

Little people are really purest essence of humandkind...

by the coast, he was regular visitor. But now when I live in Zagreb I don't see him that

much any more... And i do miss him. He would know how to deal with this unpleasant Zagreb's fog. >:-/

...The northwest wind comes and the yellow is torn full of holes,

new beautiful things come in the first spit of snow on the northwest wind,

and the old things go, not one lasts.

Ernst Heinrich Philipp August Haeckel (February 16, 1834 – August 9, 1919),

also written von Haeckel, was an eminent German biologist, naturalist, philosopher, physician, professor
and artist who discovered, described and named thousands of new species, mapped a genealogical tree
relating all life forms, and coined many terms in biology, including anthropogeny, ecology, phylum, phylogeny,
stem cell, and the kingdom Protista.
One of Haeckel's books did a great deal to explain "Darwinism" to the world. It was a bestselling,

Bunch of Cumulus clouds have settled down in the corner of my living room.

- Why? ... I don't know. They are kind of silent bunch. Luckily they have three

little stars with them and I must say they have sparkling nature...

Anyway I don't really mind them as long as they don't go cumulonimbus* on me!

*Cumulonimbus clouds - cumulus clouds can grow into cumulonimbus clouds

which may produce heavy rain, lightning, severe and strong winds, hail, and even tornadoes.

A decade ago, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Paul Crutzen first suggested we were living

in the “Anthropocene,” a new geological epoch in which humans had altered the planet.

Now, in an article for Yale Environment 360, Crutzen and a coauthor explain

why adopting this term could help transform the perception of our role as stewards of the Earth.

For millennia, humans have behaved as rebels against a superpower we call “Nature.”
In the 20th century, however, new technologies, fossil fuels, and a fast-growing population
resulted in a “Great Acceleration” of our own powers.
We are taking control of Nature’s realm, from climate to DNA.
Changing the climate for millennia to come is just one aspect.
By cutting down rainforests, moving mountains to access coal deposits and acidifying coral reefs,
we fundamentally change the biology and the geology of the planet. While driving uncountable
numbers of species to extinction, we create new life forms through gene technology,
and, soon, through synthetic biology. We infuse huge quantities of synthetic chemicals and
persistent waste into Earth’s metabolism.
Where wilderness remains, it’s often only because exploitation is still unprofitable.
Conservation management turns wild animals into a new form of pets.

It’s no longer us against “Nature.”
Instead, it’s we who decide what nature is and what it will be.

To master this huge shift, we must change the way we perceive ourselves and our role in the world.
Students in school are still taught that we are living in the Holocence,
an era that began roughly 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age.
But teaching students that we are living in the Anthropocene, the Age of Men,
could be of great help. The awareness of living in the Age of Men could inject
some desperately needed eco-optimism into our societies.

" Rain is a natural process that holds many different emotions and forms the basis of many legends,

but its main symbolic meanings are rebirth, sadness or cleansing.

In cultures where not much rain existed, rain symbolically meant life and re-birth.

In a modern urban society, rain is often seen as an irritant or hindrance.

It darkens the sky and makes the sun disappear, so emotionally, rain symbolises darkness, depression,

misery and frustration. However, rain can also symbolise cleansing. Walks through the rain

are not medically advised, but often it seems that walking through rain when one is sad can help

clear one's mind and help sorrows (symbolically) be washed away.

This once again, re-confirms the symbolic meaning of re-birth in rain. "

Terraneo is a music festival that will be happennig in my home town Šibenik this summer from 09-13 August...
I am very happy that this festival is eco-oriented and I am also very happy that my work,
which I did with my boyfriend Sinisa Cvahte, is one of the 15 selected artworks in "Drop by Drop" contest.

Focus of this contest was on preservation of water and everything that water represents for life on Earth.

Artworks will be exposed as jumbo posters all over the town and later on festival locations.

J. Derrida - The Truth In Painting

The division in the context of this work corresponds to Derrida's restitution (loss without the missing part).

It exists as an assumption but is not faithfully conducted. It represents an attempt to return to a sensed

pre (historic) state rather than a description of any biological facts.

The division in this instance has served as a training prothesis in an exercise of losing control gradually.
By losing a part of itself that it produced in the first place, the seed is not in return cut short for it.

It allows that part to evolve and to keep repeating its inborn principal in a way that is not necessarily

the seed's original way.

By giving up on its own completeness it secures its space in an emerging, further evolving entity. By letting go

its primary manners (predictability) or simply by not insisting on them, the seed allows the formation of the new laws,

it allows change and unpredictability of the growth. Entities that developed as genetical and social products

keep repeating the inborn/adopted principal but they have the right of choice if only they awake awareness for one.

They metamorphose without altering that common 'seed'. All that surrounds the seed, covers it, points it out

and rotates it... it appears and it disappears forming its appearances, its variations.

What I call the seed is the unaltering, constant component of a complex whole - the species.
The work is an unfinished metaphor for the pursuit of the seed of the species.

French poet and screenwriter. A shop worker, he began writing after his military service.
Influenced by the Symbolist movement, he renewed the ancient tradition of oral poetry,
creating "song poems" about Paris street life, collected in the anthology Words (1945).
Many were put to music and became extremely popular. His excellent screenplays for
Marcel Carné include The Children of Paradise (1945), Spectacle (1951), and Things and Other Things (1972).

I've been invited to participate in

The Third International Spring Summit Of Cheap Laser Graphics, Belgrade, Serbia.

And I did - because i liked the whole idea :-)

They say; " The aim of this event is to gather creative people from the area of design,

visual communications, architecture and other ancient skills as well as to ruthlessly promote

their work outside of their usual guilds’s borders. The concept of the exhibition is the

reproduction of works on standard office paper, size A4 by printing with the laser printer

in black and white technique. All the works, independently of the author, are on sale

at the same price – the whole 100 dinars (approximately 1 euro)."

This event will feature between 120 and 150 young artists and designers from all over the world.
After the Belgrade exhibition The Summit of Cheap Laser Graphics starts its regional tour!

Honey Bees Since Time Began

The birth of bees:
Ancient Greeks believed that bees were born spontaneously from animal corpses.
In the texts of ancient Egypt, bees were born from the tears of Râ, the Sun God. When the tears

fell onto the soil, they were transformed into bees that built honeycombs and produced honey.

Bee symbolism:

As organizers of the universe between earth and sky, bees symbolize all vital principles and embody

the soul. In the Greek religion, the bee was sometimes identified with Demeter,
the goddess of the earth and crops, who represented the soul sent to hell.

The bee also symbolizes the soul that flies away from the body in the Siberian,
Central Asian and South American Indian traditions.

Bees also symbolize eloquence, speech and intelligence.
In Hebrew, the word for bee, Dbure, has its origins in the word Dbr, speech.
They settled on the mouth of the child, Plato, " announcing the sweetness of his enchanting soul "
(Pliny) and also settled also on the lips of Saint Ambrose, the patron-saint of beekeepers.
According to Virgil, they have a grain of divine intelligence and the famous Pythia,

the priestess of Apollo, was called "the bee of Delphi".
In some texts from India, the bee represents the spirit becoming intoxicated with the

pollen of knowledge.
Because of its honey and its sting, the bee is considered to be an emblem of Christ:
it represents his mildness and mercy on one side and his justice on the other.

Honey:

In the sacred texts of East and West, milk and honey flow like a stream through the promised land.
Honey designates supreme bliss and the state of Nirvana. Symbol of all sweetness,
the honey of knowledge creates the happiness of mankind.

In modern psychoanalytical thinking, honey symbolizes the "higher self",
the ultimate consequence of work on one's inner self.

Vanishing of the Bees:

The bee population of North America and Europe is now in serious decline,

which threatens disaster to our food crops as they are dependent upon the bees to pollinate them.
The increase of commercial agriculture with its use of pesticides and destruction of wild plants and flowers
upon which the bees forage upon contributed to this problem.

Since this nearly year-long investigation first began, thousands of beekeepers around the globe have

come out of the bee yard and admitted to the same problem, with some reporting losses of more than
90 percent of their colonies.
And there are no dead bees to be found.

So why are the bees dying now?

This question merits a lengthy and well thought out response which covers massive

differences of opinion among scientists, farmers, beekeepers and government agencies.
With this crisis comes an opportunity for growth and change.
As the bees die, some people are exacting more sustainable approaches to living.
Biodynamic and organic farming are on the rise and a host of alternative beekeeping methods

are coming into fruition...

... So learn, take action and drive change.

Willow Chair by Charles Rennie Mackintosh

My own Willow chair brought to me from Glasgow... Gift from a friend :)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh (7 June 1868 – 10 December 1928) was a Scottish architect, designer, watercolourist and sculptor.

He was a designer in the Arts and Crafts movement and also the main exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom.

He had a considerable influence on European design. He was born in Glasgow and he died in London.

Willow Tearooms

The temperance movement was becoming increasingly popular in Glasgow at the turn of the century and Miss Cranston had conceived

the idea of a series of "art tearooms", venues where people could meet to relax and enjoy non-alcoholic refreshments in a variety of

different "rooms" within the same building. This proved to be the start of a long working relationship between Miss Cranston and Mackintosh.

Between 1896 and 1917 he designed and re-styled interiors in all four of her Glasgow tearooms, often in collaboration with his wife

Margaret MacDonald.

The decoration of the different rooms was themed: light for feminine, dark for masculine.

The ladies' tea room at the front was white, silver, and rose; the general lunch room at the back was panelled in oak and grey canvas,

and the top-lit tea gallery above was pink, white, and grey. In addition to designing the internal architectural alterations and a new external facade,

in collaboration with his wife Margaret, Mackintosh designed almost every other aspect of the tearooms, including the interior design, furniture, cutlery,

menus, and even the waitress uniforms. Willow was the basis for the name of the tearooms, but it also formed an integral part of the decorative motifs

employed in the interior design, and much of the timberwork used in the building fabric and furniture.
